Most students explain Mrs Johnstone's poverty by pointing to the plot — seven children, no husband, no money. That's context, not analysis. The line that actually earns marks isn't about what happens to her. It's about how she says it.

Here's the sentence AQA examiners want you to notice.

"I was gonna be... I thought I'd be... I could've been somebody"

The technique most students miss: this isn't just a sad sentence — it's three broken sentences, none of them completed. Russell uses interrupted syntax, and the fragmentation isn't accidental. Each clause starts, gestures at a future, and collapses before it arrives. The grammar performs the exact thing the line describes: a life defined by incompletion, ambitions that never got to finish forming before circumstance cut them off.

Why the repeated "I" matters: Russell keeps foregrounding Mrs Johnstone's interiority — "I was," "I thought," "I could've" — even as the play, and 1980s Liverpool society around her, denies that interiority any outlet. She has an inner life full of unrealised futures; the world she's trapped in has no space for any of them. That gap between the richness of what she says and the poverty of what she's allowed to become is the whole argument of the play, compressed into one broken sentence.

Russell reinforces this through form as much as content: the musical structure lets Mrs Johnstone's songs say what naturalistic dialogue can't — loss, aspiration, grief spoken aloud in a way straight conversation would never permit a working-class Liverpool mother to voice. The genre itself becomes an argument for taking her interior life seriously.
